July 24, 2012 - The 45th Grand Chapter is a time of first for many. This maybe your first Grand Chapter, first visit to Washington D.C. or taking your first train or plane ride. We've already told you
what to expect and
what to pack but here are some important tips to travel safely to the 45
th Grand Chapter.
Airplane:
Baggage
Check what your airline specifications are with luggage. Most airlines allow you to bring on one carry on bag and you usually pay for additional baggage based on weight per piece. Weigh your bag before the flight and bring only the necessities.
Arrive Early
If this is your first time flying, arrive at the airport two hours before your flight to familiarize yourself with check in, go to security, and find your gate.
Call for help
If you've missed a connection instead of waiting to speak to an agent, call the airline's customer-service number. Look it up before you leave and save the number in your phone. This gives you a better chance at getting a seat on the next flight.
Train:
Pillow and Blanket
Unlike airlines, trains do not have blankets and pillows for use. Make sure to bring your own if you want a comfy ride.
Snacks
The train does have a dining car but the hours can vary and can be expensive so bring your own water and snacks for your trip.
Check-in Times
Unlike airlines, you only need to arrive 20 minutes before the train leaves!
Car:
Maintenance
Make sure your car is in good condition before the long drive! Check the oil, air pressure, breaks, and any leaks to ensure a safe drive.
Carpool
See what the travel arrangements are with your brothers or other chapters in the area. Save money on gas by traveling together.
Plan Ahead
Don’t just trust your GPS or smart phone. Print off directions to the DoubleTree Crystal City Hotel. Check for any construction or detours that may change your route.
