- Acquiring an internship is a great way to keep active during the summer. An internship allows you to step outside the classroom and receive hands on experience in your desired career field. Many employers now are looking for an internship in addition to education because it prepares your for a job after college. Have an internship? Here are six tips to get the most out of it!
Make a List: Write down what needs to be done, deadlines, and upcoming events so you can stay organized. Discipline yourself to be on top of your work.
Understand Your Role: By understanding your position, you will know what is expected of you. Know your expectations and seek ways to improve the position with creative ideas. Read about the company you are working for and learn their ideals and values.
Take Advantage of the Experience: When an opportunity arises for you to learn a new skill or meet people, take advantage of it. Networking can lead to future jobs or potential references.
Find a Mentor: Talk to your co-workers and ask how they started their career. Ask for advice and don’t be afraid to ask questions.
Know Yourself: Starting a new job provides an opportunity to learn about who you are. You will learn what you are good at, what you are not, and ways to make yourself a better employee.
Time Management: You need to prioritize your social and professional life. Make time for friends and relaxation but be sure it doesn’t affect your day-to-day duties at work. Don’t stay out late if you know you have to be up early the next day.
